Waiting For Sundown

Joe Meek lazing back. The Carving refers to the fact that the Trappers all tried to be secretive and not stand out when setting their traps.

They would wait, at a safe distance until dusk when they entered beaver Ponds to set their traps. That way they weren't so easily seen by hostiles, either Indian or Whites who would steal traps and beavers caught during night.

Hostiles would hide close by and ambush a trapper when he came back in the morning to claim his trap, if seen setting the night before. They worked in reverse in the real early morning before much light, pulling

up their catches and traps. They tried constantly to effect caution just to stay alive and turning a profit in the deadly business. Indeed it was a "Risky" for sure !

15 long by 8" wide by 13" tall. Black walnut log.
