LOUIE ARMSTRONG, THE GREAT "SATCHMO"-

Louis (Satchmo) Armstrong was an Orphan, born July 4ih 1900 in New Orleans. Times were real hard for any black child being raised in New Orleans, but for an orphan they were even worse. Those kids were forced to excel far beyond what one would normally expect from one growing to maturity, just to stay alive, if nothing else. I do not recall which Orphanage, or family adopted him, nor who provided his first musical instrument, but he seized upon it, mastered it by watching and learning from adult Musicians in the Storyville area of New Orleans

and grew to adulthood as a master Trumpet player.

He developed a hoarse voice singing style that became a renowned feature, known world wide. Hollywood Movie Star Bing Crosby, a Crooner (singer and actor) and close friend of Armstrong nick named him "SATCHMO" and the name stuck like elephant glue.

He was featured for many years as a name Dixieland Jazz musician, starring in Ballrooms Dance Halls, Movies, TV and operating close to "NAMES" in all fields of entertainment such as Politics.

One of his trademarks was a white handkerchief in his hand after he got wound up performing. That was to wipe the intense perspiration from his brow as he preformed.

Tombstone carved as one piece with figure. Tombstone sags as it sinks into New Orleans soggy graveyard.

This piece is Basswood with base 31/2" X 5 1/2 " x 11 I//2 ". Acrylic colored.
