I am of those who are OSAGE, but are denied enrollment, as in my case, my Grandmother chose not to go to Oklahoma to the Rez, going up to Washington State instead in about 1904.
My Heritage is: (as close as I can figure it) 1808 Chief Nicheumanee (Walking Rain) signed a treaty representing the "Little Osage" ....The lineage of Chief's was hereditary and his son Traveling Rain succeeded him as chief.
My Great Grandmother was known as Lurana Rainy (Morris). She was born in Missouri in 1845 and is listed in the Shannon County Census of 1870 as wife of Joshua Morris, Great Grandson of Robert Morris of Philadelphia, signor of the Declaration of Independence. My Grandmother Sadie Morris (Collins) was born in VanBuren, Missouri in 1869. My Mother Gladys Collins (McKellips) was born in Grandin, Carter County, Missouri, and her sister Elsie is buried in the Grandin cemetery.
The James Collins family, part Cherokee, from Carter County Missouri, moved to Sultan Basin, Washington in 1904 and Rainy decided NOT to follow, dying somewhere in Missouri. Joshua is buried at "Painted Rock", Missouri.
As a youth my grandmother and mother joked about the wet weather in the Puget Sound area saying something to the effect that had they "Desired that much RAIN" they could have stayed with Grandma, a play on the RAINY names in their background....
I remember something very vague about Mom's Grandma being taught in Harmony, whatever town Harmony was, but she could and did write to Sadie and I had a sample of her writing on the back of a tin type photo of Sadie, her mother and sisters..
I am 73 years old. All my life I have proclaimed my Osage heritage as I was taught by my mother and I will continue to do so until I die.
My values are my word, My Honor and my Honesty, these things I pride.
I've never cared for wealth but I take great pleasure in my work of Woodcarving, being recognized as carving ALL SUBJECTS anyone could suggest.
The King of Norway owned one piece (SEE CARVING), I have work in a Castle on the Rhine (placed there by Manfred Vierthalter of the Bavarian Restaurant (SEE CARVING) for whom I really started carving).
I have done Hollywood and Movie people statues and portraits, I have made statues for nearly every Baseball club, done the 7 Foot square "Brotherhood of Excellence" of Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron at Atlanta Stadium (SEE CARVING), hundreds of Crests of Arms (SEE EXAMPLE) and have a whole room full of Indians, not Native American styled carvings, Indians: Osage, Sioux, Cheyenne, Blackfoot, etc., These are as life like as I can make them. (SEE EXAMPLE)
